For the second year in a row, the “Grillhütte” parks on the banks of the Rhine hosted the Eid al-Adha 1445/2024 celebration for the Sudanese community, organized by the Social Office of the German-Sudanese Association.
This annual event enjoys wide participation from the Sudanese diaspora, as it is nearly impossible for Sudanese abroad to spend Eid al-Adha — known in Sudan as the “Great Eid” in solitude, given its profound importance and place in Sudanese life.
A Favorite Venue
The Social Office has made a tradition of holding the Eid al-Adha celebration at Grillhütte Maaraue, which in German literally means “Grill Hut.” This open-air site in Mainz offers spacious green fields, specialized barbecue facilities, and a beautiful view of the Rhine, making it an ideal venue for such gatherings.
A Truly Sudanese Eid in Germany
By midday, the organizing team had completed all logistical and festive preparations. As Sudanese families from different regions gathered, the Social Office felt the reward of their efforts: the venue had transformed into a complete Sudanese Eid celebration, rich with heartfelt greetings and the warmth of Sudanese tradition.
In the chilly German weather, Sudanese-style barbecues and hot appetizers took on a special flavor. The coffee and tea corner attracted everyone — not only for the drinks, but also for the spontaneous singing session that became the heart of the day.
A Surprise for the Little Ones
For the children, a delightful surprise awaited: the “Hawaiian Corner,” a creative activity inspired by the colorful and joyful traditions of Hawaii. It offered entertainment that kept the children fully engaged while giving parents a chance to relax and enjoy the day.
A special Day & Social goals
Dr. Wafaa Abdel Azim, head of the Social Office, emphasized:
“Eid al-Adha in Germany is one of our most important activities. What truly matters to us is the lasting impact — the celebration goes beyond being just an event; it’s a beautiful reminder that living abroad does not mean spiritual absence from Sudan’s beloved traditions. We can live them here as well, and the heart can always find its homeland wherever loved ones are gathered.”
The Eid al-Adha celebration is one of many activities organized by the German-Sudanese Association | Rhein-Main, which coordinates a diverse calendar of events throughout the year — including religious and cultural festivities, national occasions, and community forums.
