On September 9, 2023, the Social Office of the German-Sudanese Association organized an “Open Family Day” event, as part of the Association’s efforts to strengthen family ties and create an interactive social environment for Sudanese community members in Germany.
The aim was to give families space to relax and connect away from daily pressures, while fostering solidarity and bonding among members and their children in an atmosphere that combined enjoyment with a sense of belonging.
Between Entertainment and Learning
The program offered activities for both children and adults, but the children took center stage with an art exhibition showcasing their imagination and talents, which was warmly received by the attendees. They also participated in a cultural segment where they presented visual displays about Sudanese landmarks and symbols, such as Jebel Barkal, Jebel Marra, and the Taka Mountains — a blend of entertainment and knowledge that deepened their cultural awareness of the homeland.
Sudanese Moments in the Rhein-Main
The event carried a distinctly Sudanese touch. Traditional foods and drinks, including Sudanese-style coffee, added a homely warmth to the day. A musical performance followed, featuring a variety of Sudanese songs that engaged everyone — young and old alike — in spontaneous moments that revived the spirit of Sudanese gatherings and community life.
More Than Just a Gathering
This activity was part of a broader series organized by the Association, based on the conviction that migrant communities in the diaspora need opportunities to bridge the gap with their original identities and to rebuild social and family connections in a new environment that often lacks familiar warmth.
Open family activities not only provide entertainment, but also play a vital role in strengthening identity, building trust, creating a healthy educational environment for children, and fostering effective connections among members of the Sudanese community in Germany.
