As part of its cultural programming, the Cultural Office of the German-Sudanese Association organized a hands-on workshop in Wiesbaden during the second week of March 2025. The workshop introduced children from the Sudanese community in the Rhein-Main region—ages 7 to 18—to the art of preparing traditional dry Sudanese pastries, such as biscuits and celebratory cookies, rooted in cherished Sudanese traditions.
Made with Love!
Children were grouped by age into three teams, each led by a dedicated supervisor who guided them through a joyful experience that combined learning with play.
Far from home, these dry Sudanese pastries—commonly served during holidays and special occasions—gained an added emotional flavor.
Before the baking began, the supervisors provided background on the most beloved Sudanese treats and the cultural events associated with them. Then the fun began, as each team engaged in preparing their own batch of authentic Sudanese delights.
The Most Beloved Sudanese Cookies
The Cultural Office deliberately selected three of Sudan’s most iconic dry baked goods, known for their popularity and symbolic value:
Ammonia Biscuits (Baskweet Al-Nashadir) — a staple of Eid celebrations.
Sudanese Ka’ak (Al-Na‘im) — soft, crumbly cookies commonly served during Eid and traditional marriage events like Khutuba and Sad Al-Mal.
Anise Biscuits — a winter favorite, often enjoyed with evening tea and popular for their long shelf life, making them ideal for travel and school dorms.
These pastries are more than just treats—they carry stories, emotions, and shared memories, especially for families reconnecting their children with cultural roots.
A Joyful Competition
Dividing the children into groups added a friendly, competitive spirit to the workshop. The event became less about completing a task and more about having fun together.
At the end, all participants received certificates that included the recipes and ingredient lists for the pastries they had prepared. The baked goods were then shared among the children as a sweet reward for their efforts and teamwork.
